First you will come to the Sirens who enchant all who come near them

The Siren, by John William Waterhouse (circa 1900)

Over the past 48 hours I have received somewhere in the vicinity of 170 query letters. Roughly 9 of those query letters have featured sirens as main characters.

But the coolest Siren story comes from the Odyssey.

These Sirens have the gift of singing in a very seductive manner. Each sailor who passes by their island is enchanted by their voice and trapped—made to stay on the island forever and die. The Island is covered with the bones of the men who were seduced by the sirens.

These unique sea-nymphs, stranded and isolated on their own little island, knew that Odysseus was coming so they started their seductive singing—their crazy seductive and compelling songs. But O was smarter than them. He filled his shipmates’ ears with wax and bound himself to his ship’s mast. He safely escaped the pull of the Siren song.

Reading this part of the Odyssey was always my favorite. So chilling. So seductive. So carnal. Sirens are the mysterious wanton women that we all secretly wish we could be or have.

So when I started receiving queries with Siren story lines, I was ecstatic! Vampires cannot hold a candle to the sex appeal of a Siren. So.. well played, queriers of the Siren story lines. Well played. I hope to see more of this.
