Inspired by Ms. Ketch’s comment on my ‘What is your perfect writing condition?’ poll on the side of my blog—>
…I am starting a contest.
The winner of the contest will be the proud new owner of an ARC for the highly anticipated book MATCHED by Ally Condie (Dutton Juvenile). The release date is not until November 30, 2010!
Ms. Ketch commented on my poll saying, “I actually create my own playlists using music that follows the basic plot line of my novels. It’s a lot of fun.”
As a former music journalist, both music and writing are very important to me. And personally, I cannot write without music. SO…
In order to win the ARC of Matched you must…
In the comments section: list your ‘top 3’ writing playlist songs. My favorite ‘top 3’ will win the ARC. Yes, highly subjective, but hey it’s my contest! Tip: Make sure you list the name of the song and the band.
Have fun with this. And like Ms. Ketch said: these are songs that follow the plot line of your book. If your book is great…won’t the songs be great as well?
The contest ends June 14th at 9 pm PST.
My top 3:
When I Get Where I’m Going by Brad Paisley
Angry All the Time by Tim McGraw
Soul Sister by Train
I’ve listened to my current book’s playlist so many times my 3 yo son memorized the lyrics to most of the songs. In fact, he’s singing Uprising next to me right now!
My fave three of the bunch:
Lie to Me (acoustic version) by 12 Stones
Lithium by Evanescence
Passive by A Perfect Circle
I can’t wait to read Matched. Dystopian society + YA romance = win!
Oooh what a fun contest! My three:
Bulletproof by La Roux
Rain by Mika
My Worst Nightmare by Forever the Sickest Kids
Well this is tough since all the songs revolving around my story are original (I was a musician for years). But when I think of it as a movie version with all the bells and whistles, here’s the songs I hear in my head:

Soldier on- The Temper Trap
Thanks for the contest, Bree!
A couple of mine are from my brother’s band… Actually, most of the songs I listen to while working on LURE are by my brother’s band. LOL.
Calling Me Home/Contradiction by The Rise of Defiance
My Immortal by Evanescence
Insatiable by The Rise of Defiance
(You can listen to Insatiable on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/theriseofdefiance)
I design a movie score for everything I write. In my brain I see it play out like a movie. Right now, for what I am writing, these set the tone:
Van Helsing by Alan Silvestri (horrible movie, great score)
Beetlejuice by Danny Elfman
Mad Monster Party by Maury Laws (Boris Karloff throws down a track, it doesn’t get better!)

The top three songs on my current YA paranormal romance are:
Can’t be Tamed – Miley Cyrus

Show Me What You’ve Got – Powerman 5000
Top three for me,
Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett
Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison
China Grove by Doobie Brothers
Neat idea for a contest. Mine are all odd ones, but then my story is an odd one too!
Mad World, Michael Andrews and Gary Jules version
Piano Man, Billy Joel
Reaper Riff, Walker Dow (what you have not *heard* of Walker Dow…you will!)
this is actually really interesting — i have a pretty extensive playlist since my WIP is heavily focused on music, but i’ve never thought about using songs to match the plotline…
01. Street Spirit by Radiohead
02. Little Lover’s So Polite by Silversun Pickups
03. The Bitch of Living (from Spring Awakening)

How funny–I was just talking about the songs that go with various parts of my book.
1. Hallelujah-Rufus Wainwright’s version (during murder scene)
2. Defying Gravity-Wicked Soundtrack
3. No more Fairytales-Todd Helvig (my hubby wrote this song for my book and since it’s on an actual CD you can buy, I’m counting it. :)
1. One Republic – Secrets
2. Cibo Matto – Sugar Water
3. Kou Shibasaki – Kage
When I need to get into the mood to write, these are my top 3 go-to songs:
1. Intervention by Arcade Fire
2. Re: Stacks by Bon Iver
3. He Lays in the Reins by Iron and Wine
Inspiration at its best!
Just 3???
Fortress Around Your Heart – Sting
Bu Gece (Kir Zincirlerini) – Tarkan
Need You Now – Lady Antebellum
I LOVE this contest. Combining music and writing is my fave thing to do–in fact, my cousin and I do regular posts about it on our blog. :) Here are my choices–though it’s hard to narrow it down to just three:
Colorblind–Counting Crows
Three Libras–A Perfect Circle
Unthinkable (I’m Ready)–Alicia Keys
I’m dying to read this book – what a great prize!!!
Here are mine for Shoreline – and these ones are chosen because of how well the lyrics relate to certain parts of the book/characters … and it’s strangely random that they are all American Idol contestants!!
Adam Lambert: Whataya Want From Me
Kelly Clarkson: My Life Would Suck Without You
Daughtry: Gone
My top 3:
1. Saturday Night’s Allright (For Fighting) – Nickelback
2. Moving Forward – Hoobastank
3. Welcome To The Jungle – Guns N’ Roses
Great contest! On me and my cousin’s blog, we feature a weekly post on music and writing. :) Here are my top 3 choices (it was so hard to narrow it down):
1. Colorblind: The Counting Crows
2. Three Libras: A Perfect Circle
3. Unthinkable (I’m Ready): Alicia Keys
Reaaaally cool contest! Me and my writing cuz love us some mixing of music and writing! Anyway, here are my Top 3:
1.) “Hurricane” by 30 Seconds to Mars
2.) “If You Don’t Wanna Love me” by James Morrison
3.) “Love Lost” by Trey Songz
Oh, man. I can’t decided whether or not I should actually be honest about this b/c it’s kinda schizophrenic as well as cheesy, and I really really do want to win a copy of this book… Oh, well:
Dawn – various artists (Pride and Prejudice soundtrack) [while there are time travel elements to my story, this is used a lot b/c it makes me feel calm, happy, and focused while I work. I actually rarely use it while writing scenes set in the past, though.]
Bulletproof – La Roux [This song is like a jaunty shot of fun energy. It helps me write future scenes which so far have needed to be really quick. It reminds me that pacing is important, wallowing in a scene is not. Just keep moving.]
Can’t Be Tamed – Miley Cyrus [This is also dorky fun, and I use it when I need to have a little bit of an edge between characters. I need things to be tense, but I don’t want to actually be tense myself while working. This song straddles that fine line for me. And yes, I’m aware that I’m the only person over the age of 10 who considers Miley Cyrus at all edgy.]
Marquita, I love the song “Hurricane” by 30STM!!!
Great idea for a contest!
My wip has a rock theme so my three songs are
1. Bring Me to Life by Evanescence
2. Back in Black by AC/DC
3. Hey Baby by No Doubt
What a great idea, Bree. My children and I spent numerous hours going over music suggestions for particular scenes more than a year ago. Our visions for this piece just kept on growing, and I’m not one to quit. I think we’ve covered every possible scenario. =}
I Remember You–Skid Row took the opening scene for obvious reasons.
Somebody’s Out There–Triumph is a perfect fit for the meeting between Sabrina and Allyce, because this is where their destinies collide.
Follow You Heart–also by Triumph because if Sabrina doesn’t conquer this concept, we’re in a world of…=}
Cowboy Take Me Away- Dixie Chicks
Paranoid- Garbage
It’s My Life- Bon Jovi
My top 3:
God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, by Coldplay
Time is Running Out, by Muse
Mi Confesion, by Gotan Project
:D
